The Reason Behind The Red Dust in the Waterberg

One of the first things you will notice whilst visiting the Waterberg region is the sometimes intense red-to-purple color of the soil with no shortage of red dust at all times!

The main reason for this is the very level of iron in the ground that creates oxidation which I’m essence is rust. The ground has high levels of other minerals as well which leads to our very unique landscape and flora.

The Waterberg region is said to have one of the highest lightning strike rates in the Southern hemisphere owing to this iron in the ground. Apart from absolutely spectacular rain storms, we also have phenomenal sunsets and sunrises. Almost every day during the year unless it’s been raining extensively you will witness a sunset or sunrise that is a rich red, orange, and maroon. This makes for great photography opportunities, sundowners, and game drives. The great part of this all is you can see both the sunset and sunrise from the main lodge.
